Custom Cuffs

I was recently commissioned to design three cuff style bracelets for a bridal party. Each cuff was inspired by elements of nature and the personalities of the women who now wear them.

Each cuff is a handmade one-of-a-kind piece. Materials used: sterling silver, red brass, copper.

I love sitting back down at my workbench at night when everything is quiet and there are no distractions. I use this time to experiment with new techniques, go back to my sketch book for inspiration, and create pieces without worrying about commercial appeal. My hope is that allowing myself the time to experiment will keep my skills sharp and creativity flowing.

When it comes to designing a new collection for Mushka, there are boundaries. Mushka is a collection of jewelry that embodies and elegant simplicity inspired by nature. It is important to me, to my customers, and to my brand that this theme remains consistent. My "After Hours" experiments are an outlet for other themes and ideas to be explored. These designs may not relate visually to the Mushka catalog of nature-inspired jewelry, but I show them here because I know that my customers appreciate creative metalwork.

Custom Family Necklaces

These special "His" and "Hers" necklaces were custom designed for a lovely family of three. Dad's tags are made of two layers of sterling silver riveted together for a more masculine look. Mom's tags are a single layer of sterling silver and accompanied by as more petite moon pendant to create a lighter, more feminine piece. The crescent moon pendant was inspired by the couple's beautiful daughter Luna.

A few months ago I told you about how my mom was the inspiration for the look of my first jewelry collection. Well, if my mom inspired my heart, then my dad definitely inspired my hands. He built a workshop in our basement when I was little where I was always welcome. Looking back, I bet he was a little surprised at my interest in building... my older brother was the more obvious candidate for "workshop assistant", but he didn't show much of an interest. My dad and I spent months building my dollhouse - it was three stories with full electricity (and later, an "east wing addition"). The great thing about my dad is that he would have taken an interest in any activity that I chose whether it was something he liked or not. It just so happens that we have been able to bond over our love of tools, hardware store, and working with our hands. Thanks to him, I discovered this interest very early on in life. Maybe I'll have a daughter one day that I can give that dollhouse too... and maybe she and grandpa will add a west wing. But if she just wants to rearrange the furniture and dress the dolls with grandma, that's fine too.

After Hours

I know that I am very lucky to be able to do what I love for a living. Finding the balance between being an artist and a business owner can be tricky... and lately I have found myself at my computer far more often than at my workbench. So, to celebrate Valentine's day I decided to give myself a full, uninterrupted day at my workbench with no particular agenda. I made the piece pictured above from sterling silver, copper, and brass. The entire piece is held together by a total of 16 rivets - no heat or solder used. The shapes I used in this piece were initially inspired by various parts of insects and came from an old notebook of pages and pages of sketches. I like the fact that this piece has strength and yet the design is based on such tiny, fragile little critters.

Make My Tags!

This was definitely my favorite photo shoot of all time! Look at that little guy! This is my sister Natalie with her beautiful son, Kai Joshua Taylor. Natalie is modeling a set of tags that I gave her the day Kai was born. Kai's name was kept a secret, but I made her at least tell me the initials so that I could have this ready for her. Natalie has never really been into jewelry (which is unfortunate, considering her sister is a jewelry designer) so I'm glad I was finally able to make her something special that she wears all the time. One tag is stamped with Kai's initials and the other with X's and O's which represent the lifetime of hugs and kisses this boy will be smothered with. The back of one of the tags was later stamped with his birth date, 10-18-07.... but who's looking at the jewelry anyway? I don't know about you, but I can't take my eyes off that beautiful baby! Love you Nat and Kai!!

The Meaning of Mushka

Mushka is Polish for "little fly". This is the nickname that I was given by my grandmother when I was born because I had such big brown eyes. The name stuck (everyone in my family now refers to me as "Moo") and twenty-some years later I chose this name for my company. I wanted to honor my Polish heritage and my strong connection with my family and loved ones. I also thought this name was appropriate because being an artist is not just about having skilled hands; it is about having watchful eyes. The infinite strength and beauty that I see in nature and in people inspires me everyday.
